The first legal challenge to Prop 8 will be announced later today:
Here’s the first press release of the morning regarding the passage
of Proposition 8, the ban on same sex marriages in California. It comes
from the law offices of Gloria Allred:
Attorney Gloria Allred and her clients, Robin Tyler and Diane Olson,
will hold a news conference today November 5, 2008 at 12:00 noon at
6300 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 1500 L.A. to announce a new lawsuit against
Prop. 8. Prop. 8 intended to ban same gender marriages in California.
Ms. Allred and her law firm represented the couple in their victory
before the California Supreme Court. Her clients became the first to
marry in Los Angeles County in June.
Ms. Allred will file the new lawsuit today with the California
Supreme Court on behalf of the couple. The new lawsuit will contain a
new and controversial legal argument as to why Prop. 8 is
unconstitutional.
Copies of the lawsuit will be provided to the press at the news conference.

This makes me incredibly sad. It even passed in LA County. I cannot believe we are writing discrimination into the state constitution (along with Arizona and Florida in this election cycle). I just cannot understand how two people who love each other threaten your “marriage.” For me, these kind of laws and amendments do more to destroy the sanctity of marriage than anything else. It makes me ashamed to be a Christian and even remotely be associated with this kind of discrimination (as the majority of the funding for Prop 8 came from the Catholic and Mormon churches). I cannot imagine a God (or Jesus) not embracing us all…Black, White, Hispanic and yes, gay or straight. So yes, while I’m extremely hopeful with the election of Barack Obama as President, I’m extremely disappointed about the results of Prop 8. I for one will be praying that this can be changed soon.

I’ve been homesick lately. It is compounded by the uncertainty I have about whether or not I’ll be able to go home for Christmas as well. The problem is, I started a job through a temp agency in August. I was supposed to be on the normal 60 – 90 days temp-to-hire schedule. However, a month and a half into the job, one of the executives I was assisting left the company. A few weeks later, the other guy, decided his assistant needed more of a legal background. So that assignment ended. I was quickly reassigned to a new position in the company (only missing two days of work), but that also restarted my temp-to-hire schedule. Which means, no holiday pay…no vacation pay (though that may not have happened anyway).
The company’s Holiday schedule for 2008 has Christmas Day and the day after for the “official” holiday days.
My sister (and her boyfriend) are going to be home the 20th – the morning of the 26th. Airfare is already almost prohibitively expensive…even flying in and out of Portland. If I have to work on the 24th…then my only option to get home in time to see my sister is to fly.
I’m thinking about seeing if I can take that entire week off. But there is risk in that, as they could decide just to not have me back after that week. Even if they said it was ok beforehand.
Anyway…one of a few things in my life that I wish was different.

Diesel was $2.89/gallon.
Regular Gas was $2.95/gallon.
I haven’t seen that in a long time. Just a month ago I was paying more than Premium Gas for Diesel. Yay for reduced gas costs right as my commute increased. Plus I’m getting better mileage since most of the commute is “highway” driving. Gotta love going in the opposite direction as most of the rush hour traffic.

Did I mention I voted? Have you? Less than a week to go!!!
I took a friend to a concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall on Saturday. It was the first show for both of us at the Disney Hall. The concert was part of the Songbook Series put on by the LA Phil. The theme of this concert was “Country” and featured Vince Gill. It was intimate affair (despite the grandiose of the hall itself), with Vince front and center with only a rhythm section trio backing him up. In between songs, Vince related stories about where the songs came from, and in the second half of the show, invited the audience to shout out requests. All in all, it was a pretty enjoyable show. I’ll leave the rest of the details to the LA Times review, if you are more curious. (The reviewer liked it as well.)
Other than that, not much happened in the last week. I’m going to San Diego for a concert on Saturday and then going to a show at The Wiltern on Sunday. More about that next week though.
